Xiaomi’s smart home service is experiencing nationwide outages, affecting more than 60 million users

Mijia, one of the biggest smart home platforms in China, is down now. Users across the country are reporting the malfunction status of their Mijia smart home system on social media. The topic “Mijia is Down” is also trending on Weibo, China’s iconic Twitter-like social platform.

Xiaomi’s Mijia is aware of this issue and wrote on Weibo that “due to the network failure, Mi Home App and voice control service was abnormal on June 16, the service will be back shortly.”

Since Xiaomi’s AIoT platform is strongly cloud-based, the outrage is causing tens of millions of users inaccessible to their smart home appliances. Some users complained that their smart gadgets are all disappeared from the Mi Home app and not responding either.

According to the latest financial report, by the end of 2021, the number of IoT devices (excluding smartphones, tablets, and laptops) connected to the Xiaomi AIoT platform had reached 434 million. Of these, the number of users with 5 or more devices connected to the Xiaomi AIoT platform was 8.8 million, and the number of monthly active users of the Mi Home App was 63.9 million in December 2021.

The outage began at around 8:00 PM according to most reports. As of just before 10 PM ET, it appears that the service is still under restoration.

It is the second outrage of Mijia in two months. On April 30, the service was down for four hours because of a “public cloud network failure”.
