Tencent aims to establish a third data center in Japan, where its cloud services for online games and livestreaming systems are in high demand, Nikkei Asia reported on Wednesday.

Poshu Yeung, senior vice president for Tencent’s international cloud operations, told Nikkei that cloud services for games have helped the company’s Japanese business grow by triple digits every year.

“We are considering a third site for a data center,” the executive told Nikkei.  “We have the experience, so this won’t take much time.”

Tencent will also introduce a service to support metaverse construction with hundreds of templates in Japan on Thursday. This is an update to the support service the company began in January for cloud avatar creation and livestreaming — an offering that still required technical customization by customers.

The Chinese tech giant expanded into international markets in 2016, and it currently has a presence in more than ten nations and regions.

According to Yeung, Tencent now runs 30 data centers outside of China, including recent deployments in Brazil and Indonesia.
